History of Bloomington Salt Cave

Laura Chaiken and her husband, Chris Martin, visited a salt cave in Ashville, North Carolina. The visit made them feel so good that they wanted to share the same experience with the community. There are a couple of other salt caves in Indiana, but theirs was the first one in Bloomington.

Both played a huge role in designing the 225 sq ft salt cave located at Madison Street. Visitors to the salt cave will get surrounded by almost four tons of pink Himalayan salt on the walls and floor and 500 twinkling lights on the ceiling that helps to accentuate your experience of visiting a salt cave.

Chris has stressed the importance of the salt air microclimate as it helps to create a positive environment where people feel less stressed and peaceful. The salt cave therapy is helpful for people who are suffering from asthma, allergies, respiratory problems, and skin conditions like acne.

Halotherapy or Dry Salt therapy originated in the 1840s in the salt mines of Europe and Russia, where the doctors first noticed the positive health effects of salt therapy. In salt caves that are in use today, like Bloomington Salt Cave, halo generators crush the pure sodium chloride and create a dry salt aerosol that gets absorbed into the skin and directly breathed by the respiratory system.

Bloomington Salt Cave Tours

There are no tours available for this salt cave, but we will discuss Halotherapy and why people queue up for this type of treatment. Halotherapy is a non-invasive and chemical-free treatment perfect for people of all ages.

At first, the dry and pure sodium chloride is heated and crushed into micro-particles through a machine called a halogenerator. It produces a fine, dry salt aerosol that is dispersed into the salt cave. The concentration is continuously monitored, and as a person relaxes in the cave, the dry aerosol is inhaled and absorbed into the skin.

The dry salt is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. Since the salt particles go deep into the respiratory system, it absorbs all mucus and allergens, thereby clearing any blockage in the lungs, bronchi, and alveoli. Halotherapy has been proved to be highly beneficial for those suffering from allergies, asthma, bronchial infections, colds, sinus infections, snoring, and stress.
