History of Spring Mill State Park
Spring Mill State Park shows a deep link between the natural and cultural world. The water flowing from the springs in the caves led to an industrial village in the 1800s. The entrepreneurs took advantage of the constant water source as it never froze and used it to power up many gristmills, a distillery, a wool mill, and a sawmill.
The settlers shaped the village’s landscape and cleared the land for agriculture and timber. The park shows us how nature shapes us and how we can take care of our environment. There are four interpretive facilities in the park: the Pioneer Village, the Nature Center, Grissom Memorial, and the popular Twin Caves Boat Tour.
Geological Cave Formations in Spring Mill State Park
There are no unique geological formations in any caves at the Spring Mill State Park. The caves at this park are the elements of a unique topography called Karst. The dissolving of limestone forms karst. The Park is in the Mitchell Plateau physiographic region, one of the finest examples of karst topography in the world.
Donaldson Cave and Hamer Cave are the two major caves of the park, and their entrances were formed by the collapse of the cavern roof and eventual erosion of the fallen debris. To the south of Trail 3, Bronson Cave and Twin Cave showcase a feature that is known as the karst window. The karst window is formed when the cavern roof collapses and exposes the karst groundwater to the surface.
The entrances of both these caves provide a glimpse of the stream that flows through Twin Caves and Bronson Cave and exits at the Donaldson Cave. There is a boat ride tour here that will let you explore these caves’ unique biology and geology.
Wildlife in Spring Mill State Park
The Nature Center in the State Park has exhibits that display exotic species. The live animal display houses six native snacks and an eastern box turtle. There are deer in the park which roam around freely.

Is Spring Mill State Park Haunted?
Spring Mill State Park is not haunted, but every year a fun event known as Haunted Village takes place here, where the entire village is decorated and turned into a haunted spectacle. Chainsaws and weird-looking creatures are present in almost every nook and corner. However, the Haunted Village event did not occur in 2020 due to COVID restrictions.

The Spring Mill State Park is spread across 1358 acres of land in Indiana.
Spring Mill State Park Tours
The Spring Mill State Park Twin Cave Boat Tours are the most popular activity here. The guides navigate the boat through a stream passage into the Twin Cave and show you the different cave formations. Along the way, you will see the blind crayfish, bats, and the Northern blind cavefish, which is an endangered species.
The ride goes 500 ft into the cave and then turns around. The boat tour is heavily dependent on weather conditions as in periods of heavy rain, the caves will be too flooded, and no tours will be conducted.
The cost of this tour is 3 USD per person, and no food and drinks are allowed on the boat. A maximum number of 8 persons are allowed on the boat. There are tours every half-hour, and each tour lasts for 20 min. The tours operate from 9 am to 5 pm daily.
Spring Mill State Park Tour Prices and Discounts
All visitors must pay the daily entrance fee, which is:
- 7 USD for cars with Indiana license plates
- 9 USD for out-of-state cars and
- 2 USD for each person who is 5 years or older and entering the park as a pedestrian.
- The Twin Caves Boat Tour costs 3 USD per person, and children under three years are not allowed on this tour.
Is Spring Mill State Park Cold?
The Spring Mill State Park enjoys a warm and humid climate in the summers and a moderate temperature in the Spring and Fall season. The winters can be cold, and there will be snowfall. So the park becomes cold in the winter months.
What to Wear?
It would be best to pack in a lot when you come here, depending upon the season. If you are coming in winter then do take some heavy woolens or jackets, shorts and t-shirts will be fine for you in summer but what you need is a pair of good hiking shoes.

The Spring Mill State Park is open on all days of the year from 7 am to 11 pm. However, some park features are seasonal or may have reduced hours.
What to Do at Spring Mill State Park (Beside Tours)
Apart from the boat ride and cave tours, what you can do at Spring Mill State Park would depend a lot on what season you are coming in.
In Season
You can check out the Pioneer Village, which is perfect for anybody who loves history. It was founded in 1814, and this restricted village has 20 historic buildings that showcase the life that was led back in the day. There is a three-story gristmill in the center of the village that was built in 1817. The Grissom Memorial honors the second man in space for the US – Virgil Grissom. Some exhibits display his spacesuit and the Gemini 3 Molly Brown spacecraft.
If you are coming here with family and friends, you can have a picnic here in one of the many picnic areas in the park. Lastly, don’t forget to jump into one of the two swimming pools that await you here. The tennis courts, the volleyball courts, and the basketball courts are located near the swimming pools.
Off-Season
Winter is said to be the off-season here, but you will find snow on the ground if you come here in this season. It is an excellent opportunity to play in the snow with your siblings or try to catch the snowflakes as they float down. You can go hiking or visit the Nature Nook as the Nature Center will be closed during this time. At Nature Nook, you can enjoy arts and crafts and various other fun activities. If you are here in February, then do not miss the Civil War battle enactment, as it is a fun way to learn about the nation’s history.
Best Time to Visit Spring Mill State Park
One can visit Spring Mill State Park any time of the year. The park looks beautiful in each season, but the summer months are usually hot and humid with heavy rain chances. It is the busiest time at the park, and you can come here if you do not mind the occasional showers.
The winters are cold and can become icy at times. Though the park has sparse crowds in winter, you can still have a great time by indulging in hiking and other fun things.
The Fall season is the best time to be in the park as the plants look colorful and the whole park looks beautiful. The park will welcome you with bright green trees and full-bloom flowers in spring.
How to Get to Spring Mill State Park
The Spring Mill State Park is around 90 miles south of Indianapolis via IN-37 South. It is located just 3.5 miles east of IN-37 and Mitchell on IN-60. So one needs to take IN-37 to IN-60 E and then turn left onto the park. The town of Mitchell can provide you with everything that you might need for camping, such as supplies and gas.
Hotels near Spring Mill State Park
If you are coming here to spend a weekend, you would need a place to retire. Thankfully, there is the Spring Mill State Park Inn within the park’s premises. It is a historic inn with more than 70 rooms and an indoor/outdoor pool, and great dining options.
If you plan to camp here, you can take advantage of the electric or primitive campsites for RV or tent camping. There is a camping store where you can get the last-minute needs that you might have forgotten to bring.
If you are not a camping fan and there is no vacancy at the Inn, you can look at the other lodging options in the vicinity of the park, such as cabins, hotels, and vacation homes.
