DeSoto Caverns, Alabama

The Native Americans came to know of this cave during the Woodland Period, and in 1965 archaeologists of the University of Alabama chanced upon a 2000-year-old Native American burial site that had the remains of five individuals. Records suggest that in 1723, an Indian trader from South Carolina rested for a few nights in the cave when he was traveling through the area.

During his stay in the caves, he carved his name “I.W.Wright 1723” in a rock wall in the cave. These are the oldest recorded graffiti that can be found in any US Cave. It is to be noted that the Caverns were formed because of the deposit of dolomite limestone around 500 million years ago. However, the cave is only about 3 million years in age.

How big is DeSoto Caverns?

Initially, it was thought that DeSoto Caverns was one colossal cave system, but explorations have revealed that the cave continues for some distance beyond the main room at only one place. The cave continues for around 300 hundred yards and ends at a blank wall and a small pool of water.

There are no other unexplored routes inside the cave. The main room of this cave is more than ten stories high which makes it larger than a football field. The entrance has been enlarged a bit from the earlier size when it was 4 ft in height.

History of DeSoto Caverns

Located in North Central Alabama, the DeSoto Caverns is a great place for spelunkers. It has an impressive collection of limestone formations that are revered throughout the country. But do you know who the first settlers of this cave were? Well, this cave has a long history.

The earliest inhabitants of the cave were the Archaic man (around 1000 BC), who lived on fish, nuts, and small animals. The Spanish explored the caves in the 1500s. In 1796, Benjamin Hawkins wrote about the beauty of the DeSoto Caverns in a report making it the first officially reported cave in the US. When the Civil War broke out, the caverns became an important site for mining saltpeter used to make gunpowder for the Confederate Army.

The caverns were officially opened to visitors in 1965. The high-powered electric lights helped accentuate the beauty of the caverns, and all appreciated the arrangement. Today, DeSoto Caverns is an important tourist attraction in Alabama and the US, and it hosts many weekend festivals every year.
