Spring Creek Cave is in Kendall County and is not open to the public. The cave is known for its fossil specimens and an underground river 3 miles long. The river sometimes floods out into Spring Creek after spells of heavy rains.
The cave had opened its doors to the public several times but now they are being kept shut to protect the cave myotis bat population.
History of Spring Creek Cave
We are not aware of the history of the cave, but sometime in 2008, the cave was formally open to the public again. The cave has a classic large entrance which looks pretty intimidating from a distance. In the summer of 1983, spelunkers got an opportunity to explore and survey the cave.
There is a three-mile-long underground river, and the cavers follow the mainstream passage upstream. The stream passage continued to a waterfall, and the entire stream was poured down a dome which came to be known as the Shower Stall.
The cavers could not survey beyond this point and never got a chance to go beyond the Shower Stall. In those trips, a total of 9200 ft was mapped, but soon after, the ranch got sold to a developer, and the cave was closed to the public.
The cave became the home of cave myotis bats, and to protect them; the authorities gated the cave with a well-made bat-friendly gate. Years passed, but the cave remained off-limits for exploration or mapping.
The cave has been surveyed multiple times between 2008 and 2011, and the exact length of the cave is now available. But, there is little to cheer for the public as the cave is still not open.
