Cave of Munits is an important Chumash site and was the home of a powerful Chumash shaman who was killed after he murdered the son of a chief. The cave is accessible after a short hike from El Escorpion Park, and it takes only about an hour to reach the entrance.

If you want an action-packed adventure, you must sign up for the hike to the Cave of Munits. You don’t need any ropes or special gear to get to the cave, and the journey on the trail to the cave will invoke your adventurous spirit. However, there are no restrooms along the way, so bring plenty of water bottles and sunscreen for the long hike.

The experts say that the cave was a spiritual site of the Chumash. It was the home of a powerful Chumash shaman who was killed after he killed the son of a chief. The story seems true as you get an eerie feeling when you step inside the cave.

The blank space inside the cave feels like a place of mystery and power. The visitors can explore the top of the cave; if you are an experienced spelunker, you can climb out of the chimney in the rock and view the golden land below.

There are no notable geological formations inside the cave. Although it is close to the city, the cave is very well kept, and there is not a single speck of graffiti on the cave walls. There were pictographs on the cave walls, but those were erased by a few careless visitors a long time ago.

Cave of Munits Tours

When you have parked your car on the street, you will be able to see the start of the trailhead. The hike starts flat as if it allows you to work up your muscles.

After walking a few paces, you need to turn, and then the trail becomes a bit challenging. It is an uphill hike, but very few people realize that this trail is not for beginners, although many newcomers have aced this hike with relative ease.

The trail goes uphill and slowly you will get a view of the entrance. It is not a beginner’s trail, but you can manage it with a little bit of determination. Once when you reach the entrance, do not forget to look back and enjoy the view. 

It will be a tricky climb inside the cave, and you need to be mindful of your steps. So slowly climb your way to the top, and en route, you will see a beautiful streak of light that passes through the cave, forming a wonderful light source. If you go to the other side of the cave, you will be on the Castle Peak Trail. Once done, climb slowly and start your downhill journey to the parking area.

What to Wear?

You can wear anything here, but you need hiking shoes for these trips and buy those with good traction. Although it is a short hike you can also bring some snacks with you and lastly, bring a light jacket with you. The cave region might get cold, but it depends on the season you are visiting; if you are coming here during summer, you don’t need a jacket.

What to Do at Cave of Munits (Beside Tours)

There are no tours. You have to hike your way to the entrance of the cave. An experienced caver can come out of the chimney on the rock and enjoy the view of the surroundings. 

Best Time to Visit Cave of Munits 

The best seasons to come here would be winter and spring. It gets very hot in the summer, and try to come here in the early morning as the temperature is cooler. The lighting is also better for taking pictures. 

How to Get to the Cave of Munits 

From the 101 Freeway, you need to exit Valley Circle Boulevard and drive north for 2.1 miles. Take a left turn onto Victory Boulevard, and Victory Trailhead is at the end of the street. The parking would cost you USD 3, but free street parking is also available. There is a 2.7-mile (roundtrip) hike to the entrance of the cave from here.

Hotels near the Cave of Munits 

If you plan to stay for the night, you might find decent hotels in the towns nearby but not in the close vicinity of the cave. The best option would be to drive to Los Angeles, just 20 min away from this spot.
