Subway Cave came into existence nearly twenty thousand years ago during volcanic events. It offers an exciting and unusual hiking experience, and the best part is that it affords an easy cave experience even for the kids. Just put on your headlamps and begin exploring this hidden gem of California!

Subway Cave was created when large amounts of lava were flowing across the area around the present-day location of Hat Creek. The lava got exposed to air, cooled, and formed a hard cap. At the same time, molten lava continued to flow underneath. Eventually, the hollow tubes remained, but the molten lava drained away.
History of Subway Cave
The cave is on the Northern border of Lassen National Park in the Lassen National Forest and is a key remnant of the volcanic past of Northern California. This part of the state is a portion of the Cascade Range of mountains. They were ancient volcanoes that gave shape to the geology of the region thousands of years ago and it continues even today.
Mt Lassen itself is the remnant of a much larger volcano, Mount Tehama, which is known to be the site of the largest volcanic eruption in North America.
This cave is in a safe location where one can view and explore the effects of volcanism. The Subway Cave, in reality, is not a cave but a lava tube that was created during the volcanic past.

There are maps and signs throughout the tube that points out the unique features. The most striking feature is the two mini volcanoes that appear on the floor midway through the tunnel and look like melted mud pies!
There are different textures and shades of brown and grey on the walls and ceilings of the cave.
